Superiority

  1. Polycene is burning rate catalyst which leads to a higher burning rate(20 > mm/s, at 7 Mp) with low pressure exponent (n < 0.5) withoutmigration during missile manufacturing and aging. (a liquid resin based on HTPB and grafted with a ferrocene derivative in the chain; a binder in high burning rate ammonium perchlorate based composite propellants.)

    Because most of other ferrocenium perchlorates are highly sensitive to shock/friction/static and have susceptibility to oxidation,

    these products have potential risk of the dangers . However, the chemical structure of Polycene has a vast improvement to prevents migration of the catalyst, and still allows it to be fully miscible with standard HTPB (Hydroxy Terminated Polybutadiene). Polycene can improve rocket’s overall performance from the military perspective.
  2. The Physical properties of Polycene are as follows;
  3. Trade Name : Polycene
    Generic Name : Butacene 800
    Chemical Name : Organic silicon ferrocene derivatives bonded to HTPB
    CAS# : 125856-62-4
    Iron wt%  : 7.5~8.5%
    Water wt  : < 0.1 %
    Hydroxyl index, meq/g :  0.32 ±0.05
    Viscosity  : ≤ 1000 poise at 25 degrees Celsius

    Modified binder which is grafted ferrocene derivative

Ferrocene derivatives like ferrocene, alkylferrocenen and N-butyl ferrocene are widely used as burning rate accelerators in solid composite propellants but are able to vaporize, oxidize or migrate out of the propellant during its manufacture, handling and aging. And those can cause the disoperation of the rocket motor and raise safety and hazard concerns

Polycene unlike other ferrocene derivatives is a vaporization, oxidation and migration free functional ferrocene prepolymer. It is based on HTPB resin grafted with ferrocene derivative which is chemically equipped as one. And it is the advanced catalysts compared to other ferrocene derivatives;

Details

  1. High burning rates and reduced pressure exponents
  • The use of Polycene leads to high burn rates for AP and low pressure exponents.

   Based on HTPB using a high percentage of liquid buring rate modifier and very fine a A.P.

->  B.R. > 70 mm/s(2.8ips) at 7 Mpa // n < 0.50

  • An iron content of about 8 % for Polycene leads to a better compatibility with A.P. and better safety during manufacture of the propellant, compared to a 20~25% alkyl and polynuclear ferrocene.
  1. Good processing, mechanical properties,
  • No migration during storage and aging; The migration of burning rate catalyst can induce lethal local-combustion perturbations near interface of the propellants.
  • No oxidation of the ferrocene migrated to the surface of the propellant, which causes surface hardening and leads to a very hazardous material.
  • It is vaporization free during blending and mixing under vacuum and condenses on surfaces unlike other ferrocene derivatives.
  • It can be formulated, processed and cured like conventional HTPB - based propellants.

;Polycene plays the double role of binder and combustion catalyst. And it maintains the main properties of HTPB resins.
